Almost every loan conversation in India starts with a number between 300 and 900. It gets treated like an exam result — above 750 you passed, below 700 you failed. That is not how lenders use it.
The score is a summary, not the decision
Your CIBIL score is calculated from your credit report, and it is the report that gets underwritten. Two people with a 720 can get very different answers, because one has a clean record and a short history while the other has a settled account from four years ago. The score compresses both into the same number. The underwriter opens the detail.
What actually moves the number
- Payment history (~35%). One EMI thirty days late hurts more than most people expect, and it sits on the report for years.
- Credit utilisation (~30%). The share of your card limits you are using. Running at 90% of your limit every month reads as dependence on credit, even if you clear it in full.
- Age of credit (~15%). A card you have held for eight years is an asset. Closing your oldest card to tidy up is usually a mistake.
- Enquiries and mix. Six loan applications in a month reads as desperation. A blend of secured and unsecured borrowing, handled well, reads better than one of either.
The four fixes worth making first
1. Pull your report and read it. You are entitled to a free report each year from each bureau. Errors are more common than people assume — a loan you closed still showing as live, an account that was never yours. Disputing an error is free and can move a score in weeks.
2. Bring utilisation under 30% before you apply. Not by closing cards. Pay the balance down a few days before the statement date rather than after it, because the statement figure is what gets reported.
3. Deal with settled accounts. A status of “settled” or “written off” does more damage than a low score. If you can convert it to “closed” by paying the balance, do that, and get written confirmation.
4. Stop applying while you fix it. Every application adds a hard enquiry. Applying to five lenders to “see who says yes” is the fastest way to make all five say no.
What if your score is genuinely low
A file below 650 is not the end of the conversation. Secured borrowing changes the maths — a loan against property is assessed largely on the asset, and a secured credit card against a fixed deposit rebuilds history from scratch. Both are slower routes, and both work.
