How To Choose The Right Loan

How To Choose The Right Loan

Most borrowing mistakes are not about rate. They are about using the wrong instrument — a personal loan for something that should have been secured, or a seven-year tenure for something that lasts three.

Question 1: how long will the thing last?

Match the tenure to the life of what you are funding. A house lasts decades, so twenty years is reasonable. A holiday lasts two weeks; financing it over four years means paying for it long after you have forgotten it. A car sits in between, which is why five years is sensible and seven is not.

Question 2: do you have security to offer?

If you own property, secured borrowing is roughly half the rate of unsecured and available over three times the tenure. The trade is real — the asset is at risk — so use it for durable purposes and not speculative ones.

Question 3: is the requirement fixed or fluctuating?

A fixed need takes a term loan. A fluctuating one — seasonal stock, receivables, a payroll gap — takes an overdraft, where you pay interest only on what you draw. Businesses routinely take term loans for fluctuating needs and pay for idle money all year.

Question 4: how fast do you actually need it?

A personal loan can disburse in 24–72 hours. A loan against property takes two to four weeks. If the deadline is real, speed is worth paying for. If it is not, the cheaper instrument wins.

A rough map

  • Medical, wedding, urgent short need: personal loan
  • Home purchase: home loan, never anything else
  • Large sum over long period: loan against property
  • Business cash flow gap: overdraft or invoice discounting
  • Business asset purchase: term loan matched to the asset’s life
  • Vehicle: car loan, five years or less
