How To Manage Your Finances Better

How To Manage Your Finances Better

Most personal finance advice fails because it asks for constant attention. These four habits work because after the first hour they run themselves.

1. Split income the day it arrives

Standing instructions on salary day: a fixed amount to savings, a fixed amount to investments, the rest to the spending account. Saving what is left at month end almost never works, because nothing is ever left. Reversing the order fixes it permanently.

2. Know your fixed obligation ratio

Add every EMI and divide by net monthly income. Under 40% is comfortable, 40–50% is tight, above 50% means one bad month becomes a default. Lenders use this number to judge you; it is worth judging yourself by it first.

3. Keep three to six months of expenses in cash

Not in equity, not in a locked deposit — in a liquid account you can reach in a day. This single buffer is what stops a job change or a medical bill from becoming a 36% credit card balance.

4. Review once a month, for fifteen minutes

Card statements, bank balance, EMIs, one subscription you no longer use. Fifteen minutes on the same day each month catches every problem while it is still small.

What to fix first

Pay off anything above 15% before investing anything. No investment reliably returns what a credit card charges, so clearing card debt at 36% is a guaranteed 36% return — the best available anywhere.

If existing EMIs are the problem rather than spending, consolidation may be the answer. Talk to us about it.
